Name History Weh Island and Sabang

Talking about the history, names "Sabang" comes from the Arabic language, "Shabag" which means volcanic eruption. Why volcanic eruption? the largest possible before there are many active volcanoes in Sabang, until now still be seen on the volcano in Jaboi and Volcanoes in the Sea Pria Laot.

Around the year 301 BC, a teacher of the Greek world, Ptolomacus sailed eastward and anchored in an obscure the island in the Straits of Malacca, the Island Weh! Then he called and introduced the island as the Golden island on the map of the sailors.

In the 12th century, voyages of Sinbad held Sohar, Oman, much wading through routes Maldives, island Kalkit (India), Sri Lanka, Andaman, Nias, Weh, Penang, and Canton (China). Sinbad landed on an island and named it the Golden island, the island now known as Island Weh.

While Island Weh derived from words in Aceh, "weh" which means "moving", according to the outstanding history Weh Island was originally a single unit with the island Sumatra, for one thing finally Island Weh, which moving into position widened now, because that small island is named Island Weh.

The most important for the history Weh Island is from the port in Sabang. Around 1900, Sabang is a fishing village with a harbor and a good climate. Then the Dutch build coal depot there, in deepened harbor, utilize the terrain, so a place that can accommodate 25,000 tons of coal had been built.

Steam vessel, a ship which is driven by coal, from many countries, stopping to pick up coal, fresh water and no facilities other, this can still be seen by many Dutch heritage buildings. Before World War II, the port of Sabang is very important compared to Singapore. However, when the diesel-powered marine vessel is used, then the Singapore becomes more necessary, and Sabang began to be forgotten.

In 1970, the government of the Republic of Indonesia plans to develop the Sabang in various aspects, including fisheries, industry, commerce and others. Sabang harbor itself and ultimately became a free port became one of the most important ports in Indonesia. But finally closed in 1986 on the grounds into areas that are prone to smuggling of goods.
